Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could be starting for Real Madrid when Los Blancos visit Girona this Sunday, according to a report from AS. That same report suggests that Courtois is Lopetegui’s choice to start this season and that he feels like the former Chelsea goalkeeper is ready to defend Madrid’s goal now that he has been training with the team for the last two weeks.
That leaves Keylor Navas in a tough spot. The Costa Rican has won three straight Champions League titles with the team and deserves credit for that. Lopetegui could decide to start Navas in the Copa del Rey and also the Champions League in a similar decision to the one made by Carlo Ancelotti with Casillas and Diego Lopez back in 2013. That way, both would have the minutes they deserve, even though it would not be great for their form as a goalkeeper needs to play as often as possible to get in rhythm and gain confidence.
