In a press conference prior to the Giron game on Sunday, Julen Lopetegui confirmed that the Canterano, a player that has been affiliated with the club since as young as four years of age, Sergio Reguilón, will be a first team player. After playing through every rank in the club’s youth system, the Madrid native will be earning full promotion. “Reguilón is going to be player of the first team and stays with us as the LB alternative with Marcelo” Lopetegui confirmed.

Images and reports of Fabio Coentrao had surfaced this week and Lopetegui dismissed any impact that would have to Reguilón, “Coentrao? Reguilón is staying with us. He’s worked phenomenally well and we love to keep him” stated Lopetegui. Sergio Reguilón was one of the surprise packages of the preseason. He impressed in every match he played with his composure on the ball, his engine to get up and down the flank, and his positioning while in the back four—keeping shape and anticipating danger.

Reguilón will have some opportunities this season and when they arise he will have to perform. Looking years ahead, if Reguilón continues to play at the level required, there would be space for both he and Theo as Marcelo enters the twilight of his career.
