Ramos explains why Benzema took Real Madrid’s second penalty

Just when it looked like Sergio Ramos was about to score a double from the penalty spot after being the one in charge of Real Madrid’s first penalty against Girona, Karim Benzema took the ball and gave Los Blancos the lead. It’s quite unusual to see two different players taking a penalty in the same game unless some kind of injury happens, so Ramos explained to Real Madrid TV why that happened.

“I’m the first taker and he is the second, you cannot be selfish, you have to show team spirit,” said Ramos.

The Spanish captain decided to go for a Panenka on his penalty, a very unusual and risky technique to take a shot from the spot as it gives the goalkeeper time to react if they don’t pick a side first.

“It was totally improvised,” he added. ”It’s something that I’ve used for some time and goalkeepers usually know it, but it was a good opportunity to do it,” explained Ramos to Real Madrid TV.

Right now, it looks like Julen Lopetegui will keep both Ramos and Benzema as the ones in charge of taking the penalties.
