After being rewarded with a second start and performing for a third consecutive game, Sergio Reguilón may have worked his way into Julen Lopetegui’s Real Madrid first team plans. The canterano, who has been with Madrid since the tender age of four, has deputized at the left back role with Marcelo enjoying a longer vacation due to his World Cup participation and Theo’s reported loan move to Real Sociedad expected to be finalized soon.

After the match against Roma, Reguilón spoke with reporters, “Julen is very happy with me, he has transmitted that to me. I will always do what is best for the club. Theo is still our player, but I will do what the clubs tells me. It doesn’t matter whether that is with the first team or Castilla. I will always be available”

The youngster’s attitude is exemplary. On Monday evening, Real Madrid trained at Red Bull Arena with a practice open to the public. When training was finished, Lopetegui pulled Reguilón aside and had a long talk with him, showing him different body positioning and different tactical instructions. The confidence and investment from the manager has been rewarded with three first-team level performances.

As for Reguilón, he must be in dreamland after working his way through every level of Madrid’s youth system. Reaching the pinnacle, the first team, is the ultimate goal and to play with the likes of Gareth Bale and Marco Asensio make it all the better. “Asensio and Bale are among the best players in the world and playing with them is easy. All the players would like to stay in the first team, I’m available for when they need me. I’ve always been a full back and in every game I try to give my best” he concluded
