Real Madrid C.F. and Chelsea F.C. have agreed to the loan transfer of Mateo Kovacic for the next season, until 30 June, 2019.
Although Madrid’s statement doesn’t explicitly confirm that Chelsea do not have an option to buy Kovacic after this loan deal, it’s pretty clear that the midfielder will return to Madrid next summer.
Kovacic will have the chance to prove himself capable of starting every single game for Real Madrid when he comes back to the Spanish capital. Chelsea are a quality team undergoing some changes but Kovacic has the quality to start there.
Coach Lopetegui wanted to keep Kovacic around but he admitted that the player wanted to start somewhere else. He also said that Madrid might need to make a signing “of Kovacic’s quality” now that the Croatian midfielder won’t be at his disposal next season.
