Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke to Cadena SER in an interview last night and said that his team has decreased the gap with Real after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

“If you look at our results we’re not worse than Madrid or Barcelona, but if you look at our roster from a quality perspective...It’s true that we are closer to Real Madrid now that Ronaldo left the club, though, that’s for sure,” said Simeone.

His Atletico Madrid team conquered the UEFA Super Cup over Lopetegui’s Real Madrid and it’s true that they’ve made some quality signings with Thomas Lemar and Gelson Martins. However, they’ve started La Liga season playing quite poorly and they’ve fallen 5 points behind Real Madrid and Barcelona after just three games.

It will be interesting to see if Atletico have what it takes to compete for all three titles this year. In the meantime, Simeone will surely keep saying that Atletico de Madrid don’t have the budget to do so.
