Lopetegui explains why he’s against Girona-Barcelona in the United States

Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui talked to the press this Friday ahead of the team’s trip to Bilbao to face Athletic. The coach shared his thoughts on the news that the match between Girona and Barcelona will most likely be played in the United States, explaining why he’s against that decision.

“I’m not in favor of it happening. It doesn’t benefit equality in this competition as every team should and must play in the same fields throughout the season,” said Lopetegui implying that Barcelona would play one less away game than every other team this season if Girona-Barcelona takes place in the States.

Lopetegui is correct with his point. It’s hard to predict whether Barcelona will actually take advantage of this if it ends up happening given that they would be considered the favorites to win in Girona anyway. However, it’s certain that they would be the only team in La Liga playing more home games than away games, considering that the Girona-Barcelona would be played in a neutral field.
