After making waves in the preseason with his encouraging performances, Vinicius JR has found himself far from the Real Madrid first team. He is yet to feature in a competitive game and is consistently dropped from the matchday squad. In order to maintain rhythm and adapt to life in Madrid, rather than send him out on loan, the club have decided to keep the Brazilian gem close by playing in third division of Spanish football with Real Madrid Castilla. Some agree with this decision and some find it baffling. There seems to be no in between.
Anton Meana, journalist from El Laguero, explained Madrid’s plan from a positive perspective. “Little by little, Vinicius will enter Lopetegui’s plan”. Throughout the interview on Cadena Ser, Meana affirmed that Madrid and Lopetegui have a plan for Vinciuis which involves steady progression to the first team.
Despite the backlash the decision to play for Castilla has received from many fans and pundits, it may prove beneficial in the long term. If Vinicius can gradually start playing more games with the first team and earn well over 1000 minutes over the course of the season then it may prove to be a brilliant move. The games with Castilla are about fitness and rhythm more than anything else. Santiago Solari said as much to Managing Madrid’s own Kiyan Sobhani after the mini-derby. As with all youngsters, patience will be key.
