Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric won FIFA The Best award for player of the year. The Croatian player beat Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo, who did not attend the ceremony. Modric has therefore put the Ronaldo-Messi era to an end after more than 8 years.
This is Modric’s third award of the year after he won the FIFA World Cup award for Best Player and also UEFA’s Player of the Year award. Not only Modric conquered his third straight Champions League with Real Madrid this season, he also carried Croatia to the World Cup Final, that being the main reason why he’s winning so many awards right now.
While Modric is 33 years old, he still has so much to offer for Real Madrid. Rumors suggested that he wanted to leave the club and join Inter Milan, but he ended up staying and it seems that Los Blancos will offer him a salary raise. His current deal expires in 2020 and it’s not clear whether Madrid will actually extend that contract or not.
