Real Madrid lost 3-0 to Sevilla this Wednesday and while they are still very much in the fight for La Liga title thanks to Barcelona’s shocking defeat in Leganes, it seems that Los Blancos struggle against tough opposition and defensive schemes. Here are three keys to a Madrid win the today’s Derby.

  1. Prevent Atletico’s counterattacks. Lemar, Griezmann and Diego Costa are extremely dangerous if they have room to operate. Sevilla’s first two goals were on counterattacks and Simeone will surely try to exploit Madrid’s somewhat poor transition defense. Casemiro will be an important player today and every Real Madrid player will need to stay sharp at all times.
  2. Make a statement. Los Blancos need to bounce back and have two good reasons to play with a competitive fire today. They lost the UEFA Super Cup against Atletico last August and they also need to prove they can get the job done after the abysmal performance against Sevilla. A Madrid Derby should always be important enough for these players, but this time they will also have a chip on their shoulders.
  3. Benzema and Bale need to shine again. They started the season in great form but both attackers have disappeared in the last few games. Can they carry the offense without Cristiano Ronaldo even in these huge games?
