According to a report from Spanish publication, AS, Sergio Reguilon is set to be offered a new and improved deal from Real Madrid. The 22 year old Madrid product has now worked his way through every level of Madrid’s youth system on to the first team. Since the preseason, where he earned a spot in Lopetegui’s Real Madrid squad, he has barely put a foot wrong. He has already amassed about 700 minutes this season and has started the last four La Liga matches consecutively. He has proven to be an intelligent defender who reads the game very well. He has coupled his defensive prowess with his tireless engine down the left flank and his eye for a pass (average 1.6 key passes per game). In a position which was once seen as lacking depth, Reguilon has stepped in and impressed both the Madrid faithful, Santiago Solari, and the board.

Reports did not specify the length of the extension nor the figures involved, but did claim there would be a significant pay raise for the left back. There are also rumors of a call up to the U21 Spanish National team as he still qualifies for the current squad having being born in 1996. With Marcelo, Reguilon, Achraf, and Theo all on the clubs books, the left back role is now ripe with competition. How the fullback dilemma plays out in the next couple of years will be interesting. One thing is for sure, Sergio Reguilon has been one of the bright spots in a bleaker season, and he continues to perform week in and week out during his first year in the top flight.
