Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois talked to the press after Belgium’s solid 9-0 win against San Marino last night. Courtois had been in the spotlight for quite some time after being subbed off during the match against Brugge and while Real Madrid stated that he had gastroenteritis some media published that the goalkeeper had an anxiety disorder, which Real Madrid denied a few days later.

“I know what it takes to be an elite player [face criticism]. I’m happy and I don’t have that issue,” said Courtois when asked about his critics and the alleged anxiety disorder.

“I ask the media to be responsible and respectful so that they stop spreading lies and rumors about those issues because in the end many people are suffering with those problems,” added the goalkeeper.

“I think it shows a lack of respect towards the player but also towards people who are suffering from that issue as well,” explained Courtois.

The Belgian player seems ready to make his return to the starting lineup now that he’s recovered from his illness.

“I feel better now. It was a very severe flu which obviously wasn’t pleasant at all but now I’ve recovered. I was able to train with the squad on Monday and Tuesday and I also completed yesterday’s training session. I feel strong again, I lost a lot of weight but now I’m recovered,” said Courtois.

The goalkeeper sent a message to Real Madrid fans and embraced the criticism he’s been getting lately.

“The fans at the Bernabeu have always been very critic and we know that. We will do our best with the rest of the team so that they can applaud once again,” concluded Courtois.
