Why Hasn’t CD Tacon Been Renamed to Real Madrid Femenino Yet?

By now, everyone knows Real Madrid has a women’s team. A lot of you seem to have the same question lately: why are they still CD Tacon, and why have they not been renamed to Real Madrid Femenino yet?

The answer is.....*drumroll*.. well, they didn’t come to the decision in time to take over for this season in order to change the team’s name. RFEF general rules dictate that any changes made, such as the absorption or merger of a team, must be approved at the end of the season to take place before the next season. The final vote happened on September 15th and was approved with 90.6% of votes coming in favour of fully absorbing the team. Since this final General Assembly vote happened after the beginning of this season, the soonest the team can be officially rebranded as Real Madrid Femenino is for the 2020/2021 season.

So why did they wear the Real Madrid crest during the game against Barcelona and not during the rest of the game? Well, no one really knows. My guess is that it’s just because it was the opening day game and they were playing against Barcelona and they wanted to reinforce the fact that we’re rivals. For the longest time, the Clasico in the women’s league has been between Barcelona Femení and Atlético Madrid Femenino which is to be expected when there hasn’t been a Real Madrid Femenino in the picture until now. We’re going to have to earn back our rightful place in the Clasico. Along those same lines, I have a question: is it still a derby with Atleti? Or is our main rival now going to be between us and Madrid CFF? For those that don’t know, Madrid CFF was kind of the unofficial Las Blancas before CD Tacon got picked up. Their kit is white as an homage to Real Madrid and they were falsely rumored to be an acquisition in 2014.

CD Tacon’s next game is Sunday, October 13 at 4:00 AM (Mountain) against Valencia at Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna.
