Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy talked to Real Madrid TV and shared his thoughts about his career in football and the process of signing for the club this past summer. Mendy was told he would never play football again because of a hip injury when he was still 15 years old.

“When you’re 14 or 15 years old and the doctors tell you that you can’t play football you just break down,” reveals Mendy.

The left-back started playing football in PSG’s academy but he made his debut in professional football with Lyon.

“Bruno [Genesio] gave me confidence from the beginning, I am thankful because he gave me the chance to play in elite football,” explains Mendy.

Real Madrid decided to spend €50 million to sign Mendy away from Lyon this past summer and the left-back didn’t want to let that chance go by.

“When a team likes Madrid shows interest in you it’s something that makes you very happy and a train you must catch,” he says.

When asked about his future role in the team, Mendy showed confidence.

“I will be Marcelo’s successor. There’s still a long time to go until that happens, but if they signed me it’s because they saw potential. I have to keep working hard, but why not?” concluded Mendy.
