Real Madrid earned a solid and convincing 1-3 win at the Wanda Metropolitano against Atletico de Madrid and academy player Sergio Reguilon was arguably one of the most pleasant surprises for Los Blancos.

Reguilon has been solid all season long and that’s been good news for Santiago Solari given how poorly Marcelo has defended this season. This Saturday, Reguilon just dominated the Derbi defensively and played with a lot of poise in what was a very tough and intense match.

“Reguilón has set a precedent for all the youth team players, he shows that there is always a chance for them if you have talent, dedication and a hard-working outlook. With those you get into the first Real Madrid squad,” said Solari about his young defender when asked during the post-match press conference.

Angel Correa has been one of Atletico’s best players this season yet Reguilon managed to keep him under control for most of the game. Not only he showed he belongs in the squad, Reguilon also made his case to become a starter for the rest of the season unless Marcelo stops being a liability on defense.

Real Madrid face Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 this upcoming Wednesday and it will be interesting to see if Solari decides to give Marcelo some more minutes so that he can improve his form and conditioning.
