The Croatian has been a crucial cog in the unprecedented success of Real Madrid in recent seasons— winning four of the last five European cups. His career and talent were finally recognized and rewarded, after winning the prestigious Balon d’Or award in 2018. The renewal will see him extend his stay at Los Blancos for another two years, ending when Luka reaches 36 years old. Reports suggest that he will also become one of the highest paid players within the squad—at the same level of Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos. With this renewal it is expected that Luka Modric would retire at Real Madrid, something the Croatian has alluded to in the past.
The renewal will likely have a domino affect on the clubs future plans. The question surrounding Modric’s Croatian counterpart, Mateo Kovacic, has more or less be answered— it is now highly probable that Kovacic officially departs this summer from Real Madrid. Dani Ceballos and Fede Valverde now have another two years to prove themselves under the tutelage of Luka Modric. If the Croatian can ultimately retire with Real Madrid, he will be one of the very few that does, something Raul nor Di Stefano managed, and it will be a testament to the quality of his play despite the probable decline.
