Real Madrid legend Luis Figo, who was the first galactico signed by Florentino Perez, talked to MARCA in an interview and explained why he decided to leave Barcelona and join bitter rivals Real Madrid.

“When you make a decision you always think it will be for the best. I was looking for recognition from the world of football and trying to improve in every possible way, financially and also with titles,” said Figo.

Madrid spent €60 million to trigger Figo’s release clause and sign the Portuguese winger away from Barça right after Florentino Perez won the election to become Real Madrid’s president.

Figo also said that Sergio Ramos deserves to win the Ballon D’Or.

“It’s clear that Sergio Ramos deserves to win the Ballon d’Or. Being a defender is almost like being a goalkeeper, it’s a lot more difficult to win it, but Cannavaro managed to do it.It depends on the moment, on the year, but for quality alone it’s obvious that Ramos should win it,” he added.

Ramos’ chance to win the coveted prize has probably gone by already, given that you usually need a bit of success with the national team to conquer it. Still, Figo has a point and Ramos could be a candidate if Madrid complete a successful season next year.
