Real Madrid have named Lyon left-back Ferland Mendy their priority for the left-back spot, according to a report from MARCA. The French defender would have a €45 million prize tag and now Madrid will have to negotiate in order to complete the signing and add some depth to the left flank of the defensive line.

The French press suggest that Madrid will try to sign both Mendy and Ndombele away from Lyon but it looks like Zidane will trust Casemiro and Valverde for the defensive midfielder spot.

Mendy will compete with Marcelo for the starting spot and it definitely looks like Sergio Reguilon will leave on a loan deal. It could be argued that Reguilon played well enough this season to secure his spot in the squad past this summer, but coach Zidane seems to think he’s not ready yet as Reguilon hasn’t played meaningful minutes ever since the French coach confirmed his return to the club.

Mendy is still 23 years old but has completed a brilliant season with Lyon. He’s a physical defender who can make an impact offensively, just what Real Madrid needed.

His signing would put Theo Hernandez —on loan with Real Sociedad— in a very tough spot and quite possibly in the transfer block as well.
