Match Preview
Real Madrid partake in their final road match of the season when they travel to Anoeta on Sunday to take on Real Sociedad.
Los Blancos are coming off a 3-2 home victory over Villarreal. Sociedad are also coming off a victory 1-0 last weekend over Alavés.
Real remain in the third spot in the LaLiga table, still maintaining the 10-point lead over Getafe. Sociedad are currently in eighth, in a three-way tie with Espanyol and Alavés at 47 points apiece.
The last time these two clubs played was at the Bernabéu back at the start of January where Real suffered a 2-0 defeat. With that loss in mind, Real will be looking for a better performance on the road in San Sebastián on Sunday evening.
Injuries/Suspensions
Bale, Navas, Reguilón, Varane, and Ceballos are all out of Zidane’s released squad ahead of Sunday’s match, all likely due to rest. Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Odriozola both remain out with their injuries.
Sociedad have been without Diego Llorente, Illarramendi, Adnan Januzaj, and David Zurutuza, who could all be set to return against Real. Ander Guevara, Luca Sangalli, and Aritz Elustondo are all set to miss Sunday’s match.
There are no suspensions for either club ahead of this match.
Potential XIs
Real Sociedad
Rulli; Zaldua, Llorente, Moreno, Munoz; Merino, Illara, Guidetti, Pardo, Januzaj; Willian Jose
Real Madrid
Courtois; Carvajal, Vallejo, Nacho, Marcelo; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Vazquez, Vinicius, Benzema
With Navas out of the squad, Courtois will likely take back the net in Sunday’s match.
Zidane has a few options he can go with in the attack, with Bale and Ceballos missing as well. He has Isco, Brahim, Asensio, Vazquez, and Vinicius all to choose from. Benzema is also back in the squad, he may get the start over Mariano.
This is another lineup spread out the minutes at the tail end of this season and focus on a heavy rotation.
Prediction
Real Sociedad-Real Madrid 2-2
This match could go many ways especially with how Real has been on the road and their inconsistencies overall all season. With a heavy rotation likely, it’s a bit unpredictable just how the squad will play in Basque Country.
Real have already sustained the 2-0 loss to Sociedad this season, so there is the possibility of Real conceding a bit here as well.
With the season over after next weekend, there’s really nothing left to play for as it’s been for about over a month now. Real have the Champions League and third LaLiga spot locked up and their focus is likely on the coming summer already.
Still, there is football left to be played and Zidane and company will want to get a victory on the road if possible, though I can foresee a draw or even a loss at Anoeta.
Hopefully, Real can finish their away matches for the season more favorably than they have all season Sunday night.
