Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane talked to Real Madrid TV and shared his thoughts about the 2019 pre-season stage taking place in Canada.

“We’re happy with the work we’re doing, we’re doing really well in terms of our fitness and getting up to speed with the ball. We’re gradually increasing the tempo,” said Varane.

Fitness is clearly the priority in this ongoing pre-season stage, as the players have had a month off and will need to be ready for what’s going to be a long season with many games to be played.

Varane was rumored to be on his way out of Real Madrid for most of the 2018-2019 season yet he confirmed that he will stay in the club. Now, he seems to be focused.

“On an individual level, I want to perform to my best. I’m in good shape, I’ve had a good rest and we’re working hard to make sure I’m at my best level,” explained the French defender, who didn’t complete good performances during the first half of the 2018-2019 season.

Varane is expected to be a starter alongside Sergio Ramos. Still, Militao could compete hard for a spot in the lineup and ultimately the Brazilian defender will allow Ramos and Varane to rest more often and be fresh when the decisive matches come.
