Martin Odegaard has been sent on his third successive loan spell, this time to a La Liga rival, Real Sociedad. Odegaard will look to be a prominent figure for the Basque side, already starting in a central attacking midfield role during the preseason for La Real. In an interview for Marca, he revealed that he has already extended his contract with Madrid and some of the thought process behind his move to Real Sociedad:
Decision to move to Real Sociedad
“My goal is to succeed at Real Sociedad and one day play at Real Madrid. I had Champions League and Europa League options, but for me the most important thing was to feel comfortable in my new team, with the coach, and with the project. That is why I chose Sociedad. Madrid did not apply any pressure in terms of my decision, they obviously told me what clubs were interested and what offers were available, but the decision was mine”
“I needed to play those years in Holland and they were very good for me. Real Madrid watched my games closely. It’s a big step to go from Holland to Madrid, where it is very difficult to play, because there are so many good players. Coming to Sociedad is the right next step”.
Debut at 16, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo
“It was a very special moment, a dream come true. I knew I was going to debut in the last 30 minutes. Replacing Cristiano Ronaldo was specular. It was a great experience to train with the best players and see how they worked. I looked at every detail to help me improve. It was just amazing to be 16 and to train with the best in the world!”
Extension of contract with Madrid and Two Year Loan Spell
“The idea is to stay at Sociedad for 2 years. I have a contract with Real Madrid, I had extended it before coming to San Sebastian”
“Zidane is a great coach. His work as the head of the first team, winning 3 Champions League’s, is exceptional. And, in the B team, I learned a lot from him. That is one of the reasons why I renewed with Real Madrid. Zidane also played in my position. It is very special for me”.
Since the moment Odegaard arrived as a 16-year-old, he has shown maturity beyond his years. He is another Real Madrid young player with a good head on his shoulders. He is willing to be patient for his Real Madrid opportunity and continue taking gradual steps to the first team. Fans of the Norwegian will be encouraged to hear how closely Madrid followed his matches while in Holland and the admiration he has for Zidane and the influence that had on his decision to extend his Real Madrid contract.
