What started off as a disastrous game for Real Madrid ended up becoming a narrow win for the club as they fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Arsenal to tie 2-2 and eventually win on penalties.

Against Unai Emery’s side, Real Madrid were ready to find their first win of the 2019/20 pre-season but a red card for Nacho in the ninth minute allowed Arsenal to quickly grab hold of the game.

Eventually, the Gunners found themselves up 2-0 but were also down to 10 men after Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off just before halftime.

With both teams level on the pitch, Zinedine Zidane and all his players eventually found a way to push for a victory and a few put on some convincing performances.

Full player ratings below:

Keylor Navas - 7: It was a surprise to see the Costa Rican in goal but he put on a good performance while fighting for a starting position during the regular season. Just missed saving Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty and also had some key saves.

Dani Carvajal - 7: Looks just as good as he has in the past. Was trying to move around the front right with Benzema and put in good crosses when someone was in the box. Solid performance.

Nacho Fernandez - 3: Made two huge errors in the first half that could have cost Real the game. Not entirely sure where his head was but definitely cannot make those mistakes again, pre-season friendly or not. Was very, very lucky Arsenal also went down to 10 men.

Sergio Ramos - 7.5: Remained one of the leaders on the pitch when the team was scrambling to figure themselves out in the first half. Made the effort to keep Aubameyang’s second goal out of the net while everyone watched.

Ferland Mendy - 8: Was one of the better players during the game despite only playing the first 45 minutes. Used his speed to open up the game and move the ball out wide with Hazard and Benzema when needed.

Lucas Vazquez - 6.5: Was not very involved in the game and often found himself alone along the right hand side but when he had the ball he did good work and tried to find teammates in the middle.

Luka Modric - 6.5: Tonight’s game for the Croatian was not one of his betters ones as he had trouble finding his footing in the midfield without Kroos to work off of. Had a shot on goal but it went well wide.

Toni Kroos - 7: Had to change positions early in the game after Nacho’s red card and tried to act as a holding/defensive midfielder to help the back line. Not a stellar performance from the German but still an important player for the flow of the game.

Eden Hazard - 7: Was good to see the Belgian start against for Real Madrid but he was particularly quiet tonight. Made some good moves and linked up well with Benzema and Mendy but didn’t have a lot of individual runs towards goal.

Luka Jovic - N/A: Not enough time on the pitch to judge, unfortunate to be substituted off.

Karim Benzema - 7: Did well to split CF role with Jovic during the first 10 minutes and deepened his position when needing to create more movement in the midfield. Had some good attempts on goal that should have hit the back of the net and would have risen his rating.

Thibaut Courtois - 8: Had a very good game in goal with a few key saves during regular time and of course coming up as the hero in the penalty shoot out with yet another save. Used his frame well to make it hard for Arsenal to score.

Marcelo - 7.5: Showed his experience down the left wing and while he might not be as fast as he used to be, his ability to find ways to put crosses in for his teammates is second to none and that exact talent generated the assist for Asensio’s goal. Veteran performance.

Raphael Varane - 7: Once again put on a solid performance after coming on in the first half for Nacho. Had one mistake at the back that could have cost Real Madrid but he made up for it after scoring a penalty. He doesn’t take kicks very often, but it was a very convincing one.

Adrian De La Fuente - 6.5: Nice to see him grab some minutes with the first team in place of Sergio Ramos. Was good at man marking at the back and challenged players but still seemed a little shaky in certain scenarios.

Alvaro Odriozola 6.5: Had somewhat of a quiet game tonight and took a while to get into his groove but when he did, he created lots of trouble down the wing for Arsenal.

Isco - 8: Was one of the best midfielders throughout the game after coming on in the second half and put on a better performance compared to Modric. Was a good outlet for down the middle and put away a good penalty.

Marco Asensio - 8: Was again one of the stars of these pre-season games. Asensio likes these tournaments and came out flying today. Always was trying to advance towards the net and was putting on a show. Set up and finish of his goal was great. Very unfortunate about the injury.

Alvaro Fidalgo - 7: Nice to see the playmaker with the first team, knew how to make himself available in open space and made interesting runs to try and help move the team towards goal.

Jaime Seoane - 6.5: Tried to get into open space but seemed very timid going forward, would only make runs the odd time and gave away balls. Tried to help in defence to make up for mistakes.

Gareth Bale - 8.5: The Welshman had the biggest impact on the game and rightfully deserves one of the highest rankings. Scored the first goal and cleared one off the line. Could have been higher if he put away the penalty too.

Vinicius Junior - 8: After Asensio came off injured, Vinicius Junior really made the most of his opportunity to show Zidane what he can do. Was always looking for passes into the box for his teammates, drove in himself and kept possession with his footwork. Penalty was lucky.
