Real Madrid lost 3-7 against Atletico de Madrid and they were down 0-6 in the 50th minute. That says enough about the kind of performance completed by Los Blancos, who will need to bounce back very soon.
Thibaut Courtois: 1 - Conceded five goals in the first 45 minutes. The defensive line didn’t help him but Courtois should’ve done better just a few days after saying that “it’s clear who the starting goalkeeper is now.” Courtois will still be the starter when the season kicks off.
Odriozola: 2 - The young defender is not taking advantage of Carvajal’s poor form and tonight he tried to contribute offensively but his defensive output was just not good enough.
Ramos: 1 - Ramos himself admitted after the game that Real Madrid took this game as a friendly match, unlike Atletico, who played with composure. Diego Costa dominated him tonight. He needs to pick it up.
Nacho: 2 - A terrible defensive performance but he scored. Nacho has proved he should not be trusted this season and he is not the same player he was two years ago. Nacho has been one of Madrid’s worst players this preseason stage and it’s probably time to sell him, but the club appear to be thinking differently as they will send Vallejo on loan instead.
Marcelo: 4 - He has been a bright spot this preseason. He’s not a defensive-minded left-back yet he’s played with effort all through the three games played in the United States. His performance was bad, but not as embarrassing as the ones put by some of his teammates.
Kroos: 1 - It’s clear that he’s not comfortable playing as a defensive midfielder and that will be solved as soon as Casemiro returns from his vacation. Joao Felix was as comfortable as he could be right behind Kroos and the German player didn’t even seem to care. Real Madrid showed faith by giving him a contract extension this summer even though he was one of the team’s worst players last season. Kroos will need to play better if he wants to prove himself worthy of that deal.
Modric: 3 - Saul and Koke were in total control of Atletico’s midfield. Modric will probably move to the bench if Madrid sign Pogba this summer and that should help him, given that he’s going to turn 34 years old next September and that he will not be ready to play every single game.
Isco: 2 - A ghost. The Spanish midfielder is in better shape than he’s ever been yet he has not taken advantage of the opportunity. All in all, he might play on Real’s right wing when the season starts, although that position doesn’t suit his game.
Hazard: 2 - He will be expected to lead Madrid’s offensive line and tonight he just didn’t do it. Hazard won’t get as much room to operate as he had in the Premier League and he will need time to adjust. While he was good against Bayern and Arsenal, his performance against Atletico probably shows that Madrid might still need help offensively.
Vinicius: 3 - Played on Madrid’s right wing and his performance wasn’t encouraging. Missed a clear chance and hit the post on another. Vinicius has not been as creative off the dribble as he was last season and one an only hope he recovers that particular skill soon enough.
Jovic: 1 - Left the game after just 30 minutes with an ankle injury, but was a ghost during the time he was given. While it’s true that his teammates are not finding him, Jovic needs to get more touches.
Benzema: 3 - Converted a PK for one of Madrid’s three goals but otherwise wasn’t as involved as he often is. Still, it’s clear that he’ll be starting when the season kicks off.
Navas: 3 - Made a couple of good saves but still conceded twice. Tonight, he was better than Courtois. Still, both goalkeepers have struggled this preseason, conceding the same number of goals having played the same minutes.
Vazquez: 3 - Zidane used him so that the team could play with a better attitude. That’s about the only thing Vazquez brings to the table right now. It’s refreshing to see when the team is losing 0-5 but everyone knows it’s not good enough for this team.
Carvajal: 2 - He’s been a mediocre player for quite some time now. Tonight, he was sent off in the 65th minute after a melee with Diego Costa. It’s obvious that he cares, but it’s time for Carvajal to start playing better.
Kubo: 5 - He gets a pass because he joined the game 1-6 and was quite possibly Real Madrid’s best player tonight. Kubo is showing composure and promise, although that’s not enough to grant him a spot in the first team.
Bale: 5 - Almost found the back of the net in which possibly was the last time he wore Madrid’s white shirt. Entered the game alongside Castilla players Rodrygo and Kubo, which all but confirms that Zidane just doesn’t want him.
Rodrygo: 4 - He was not to blame for Madrid’s lack of threat offensively, but Rodrygo was a bit too shy.
De La Fuente: 4 -The game was already over when Zidane decided to give him minutes.
Hernandez: 5 - Scored and was not to blame for Madrid’s defensive struggles.
