Sergio Reguilón, one of the revelations for Real Madrid last season, will now have the opportunity to play against his parent club as Sevilla take on Real Madrid on Sunday evening. Zidane decided to keep faith with Marcelo and bring in Ferland Mendy at the start of the season, meaning Reguilón was forced to find minutes away from Madrid. He has found the perfect landing spot in Sevilla with Julen Lopetegui, who has the utmost confidence in the player.
In an interview with Marca ahead of the match, Reguilón discussed his first year at Madrid, Zidane, and his relationship with Lopetegui.
Playing against Madrid: “Right now my team is Sevilla, my badge is Sevilla and my fans are the Sevilla fans.”
Julen Lopetegui: ”The coach is a great coach and has a great way of playing. I like him a lot. I’m really grateful for the confidence he is giving me.”
Match up with Gareth Bale: “I know what Bale is like and it’s difficult to stop him. I was with him for a year and I know where he might go, but it’ll be very difficult to stop him. I hope to be up to the task.”
First professional season: ”Last season with Real’s first team? It was unforgettable. To play your first year in professional football at Real Madrid is something unimaginable for a kid. It was an experience I’ll always remember. I remember it with a lot of emotion.”
Zidane: “The coach has his preferences. When he came he opted for Marcelo and then the arrival of Mendy meant the obvious thing was for me to earn minutes away from the club and we picked the right destination.”
Return to Madrid?:“ I’m only thinking about my day-to-day work. What will come will come.”
Celebrate a goal?: “Obviously I wouldn’t due to the respect I have for the club that raised me.”
Spain Call-Up for Euro 2020: “It’s a dream I have for tomorrow to be called up by the national team. I’ll be available when they call.”
