The Spanish Football Federation announced that Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez will be the referee when Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid battle for the 2020 Spanish Supercup title this Sunday in Saudi Arabia. Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva will be in charge of the VAR.
Sanchez Martinez has called two games for Real Madrid this season and both have been draws for Zinedine Zidane’s men, one against Betis (0-0) and the other one against Valencia (1-1). He was also in charge of Atletico’s 0-0 draw against Valladolid this season.
Sunday’s Final will be the second Madrid Derby of the 2019-2020 season after the 0-0 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano. Sanchez Martinez will surely have his hands full as the meetings between these two teams are always very controversial and intense.
Real Madrid will be expected to control the tempo of the game and are currently the favorites to beat Atletico, although Simeone’s men will surely be confident about their chances after Thursday’s late and shocking win against Barcelona in the second Semifinal.
