We now know how Thibaut Courtois saved a penalty, and bamboozled Saul into hitting the post.
At the end of the below video — which shows everything that transpired before the penalty shootout among the Real Madrid huddle — Mariano Diaz expertly tells Courtois to wave his arms around like an octopus in order for him to succeed at his task.
Mariano’s advice turned out to be absolute genius as Real Madrid won the penalty shootout.
Other things to note from the video:
- Vinicius Jr, quite timidly, raises his hand and hopes that someone doesn’t notice him. He is completely ignored, and goes back to pretending he’s not part of the discussion. Let’s be clear — if he really wanted to take one, he would’ve stepped up with confidence and asked to have his name among the five shooters.
- Toni Kroos volunteers Rodrygo Goes.
- Mariano makes it clear that he doesn’t want to shoot first. He was probably the fifth taker.
- Dani Carvajal steps in and says he’ll take the first penalty.
