Real Madrid historically struggle after the new year break — only 1 win in their last 5 attempts. Zidane spoke in the press conference prior to the match about attempting to break that pattern against Getafe. Although they played poorly, especially in the first half, Real Madrid managed to beat their neighbors from the south of Madrid by three goals to none with Thibaut Courtois and Raphael Varane playing instrumental roles in the victory. Full match ratings below:

Thibaut Courtois—9.5: What more can you ask of your keeper? His best performance in a Madrid shirt, especially in the first half. Made three world class saves to keep Madrid in the match. The Belgian is finally beginning to win the hearts of Madridistas.

Dani Carvajal—6: Had a tough battle with Cucurella down Madrid’s right flank. Struggled at times with Getafe’s unrelenting press.

Raphael Varane—9.5: A captain like performance from Varane. Two goals, two direct passes which found Benzema and Bale and nearly were converted to goals, won 5 aerial duels, and had 9 clearances. Varane was immense and stepped up in the absence of Sergio Ramos.

Eder Militao—8.5: The 21-year-old Brazilian continues to impress with every passing match. He was a rock at the back and produced 9 clearances, 3 interceptions, 2 tackles, and won 8 aerial duels. Militao and Varane were crucial in keeping Getafe at bay.

Ferland Mendy—7: Quietly had a good performance. Getafe produced very little in offensive threat down Mendy’s flank. Was involved in the third and final goal with a good bit of skill, allowing the ball to roll through his legs before distributing.

Casemiro—8: The Brazilian continues to produce match after match. Formed as part of that central core with Militao and Varane.

Luka Modric—5: Yes, he scored the final goal and made a great run in the 96th minute but he was completely overrun in this match. He struggled physically and played far too many loose passes.

Toni Kroos—6: Struggled to get into the match and find a rhythm, but was crucial in the second goal as it was his set piece from which Varane headed home the goal.

Gareth Bale—4.5: Had a good battle with Nyom early on, but offered almost nothing to the Madrid attack. His inconsistency means he can’t be relied upon over a 38-match-day league.

Karim Benzema—5: Probably the Frenchman’s quietest match of the season. Had no service and provided very little production. Had one moment of magic with a lovely control and then turn on Djene, but the finish was directly at Soria.

Isco—4.5: Offered very little — could not get involved vs a physical and intense Getafe.

Substitutions:

Vinicius JR—5: Had one golden opportunity to score but took a heavy touch and squandered the chance.

Fede Valverde—6.5: Provided the the third assist for Luka Modric in the dying minutes of the game.

Luka Jovic—6: Played the last 10 minutes of the match and showed some good control and target play vs Getafe backline.
