Manchester United will target Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane next summer, according to a report from British newspaper Daily Star. Varane is under contract until the summer of 2022, so Madrid could possibly be forced to extend his deal if they truly want to be under control of Varane’s future.

The Daily Star is not the most reliable outlet in England when it comes to transfer rumors, though, so Madrid fans should expect Los Blancos to offer Varane a new contract fairly soon considering his career and his quality as a football player.

If United can’t sign Varane, they’d reportedly go after Red Bull Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, who was also in Real Madrid’s shortlist, according to some rumors.

Either way, Varane will be expected to lead Real Madrid’s defensive line for many years once Sergio Ramos enters his decline as a player and eventually leaves the club, so knowing that it will be a priority for Madrid to sign that extension.
