The Vault: Real Madrid’s Historic Comeback Over Borussia Mönchengladbach In 1985

Real Madrid does not have a prolific history with Borussia Mönchengladbach, but it does have a memorable one.

In what was one of the most iconic moments in Real Madrid history, the club came back from a 5 - 1 first-leg deficit against the Germans in the UEFA Cup round-of-16 to win 4 - 0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was a night synonymous with ‘The Spirit of Juanito’.

The second-leg in Madrid started off with a bang — with two goals from Jorge Valdano’s head within the first 20 minutes. Santillana then scored a brace to make it 4 - 0. With Real Madrid grabbing hold of the tie on aggregate, Juanito was substituted in the second half in what was a memorable moment — with the Spaniard leaping in the air and the crowd firmly behind him.

Real Madrid then went on to win the UEFA Cup that year to defend their crown from the year prior.
