Zidane: “Courtois saved us, we’ll try to ensure he suffers less in the future”

Real Madrid have moved on to 10 points, going top of LaLiga Santander. Zinedine Zidane is content with what he has seen from his team so far, even if Los Blancos conceded some good chances to Levante during Sunday’s 2-0 victory.

Summarising the match, Zidane said: “Our opponents had good moments. We had a good first half and started the second half well too, when we could have scored a second or third to make it a different kind of match. We did manage to get that second goal at the end. It was a game where we had to suffer at points, but that’s what you have to do. They had chances in the second half, but that’s normal. I’m proud of what these players are doing. We’ve only just started and already that’s three wins and one draw. What more can I ask for?”

Asked if he comes away from the match feeling positive or negative, Zidane insisted he is on the positive side. He replied: “I don’t leave this match with bad feelings. It’s true that they had two or three chances and it’s true that we can improve and concede fewer chances, which we’ll try to do. But I’m thinking about the positive aspects. We’ve collected three more points and we had a clean sheet, so we’re all happy.”

Thibaut Courtois played a huge role in that clean sheet and Zidane was asked if it’s a bad sign that the goalkeeper is having to be called upon so much in these first weeks of the season. “He is part of the team too,” Zidane replied. “He saved us, just like all goalkeepers look to do for their team. We’ve got to keep going and we’ll try to ensure our goalkeeper suffers a little less.”
