Raphael Varane and France played their first friendly of the international break against Ukraine. It was a 7-1 drubbing from the defending World Champions.
Ferland Mendy will be a part of the French squad moving forward, but was not listed in the match-day squad for Les Bleus on Wednesday. Varane did not start either as he was subbed on for Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano at the half.
Varane was paired with Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet for the duration of his playing time. He looked fine for most of his time, but he and Lenglet did have a bit of a lapse defensively on Ukraine’s lone goal.
Lenglet pressed Dynamo Kyiv’s Viktor Tsyhankov while Varane held a bit back. It was just a great individual effort from the Ukrainian and a goal that was clearly hard to prevent.
There were four different goalscorers for France, including an own goal from Ukraine. Some honorable mention should be given to Eduardo Camavinga, who has continued to impress in his opportunities with the national team and scored a bicycle chip shot for the first goal of the match.
Olivier Giroud had another two goals in this match as he has been red hot for the French as of late.
Varane, Mendy and France play in the third Nations League match against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Sunday. He will hopefully see some action from Mendy as well as a start from Varane.
