Raphael Varane marshalled the backline in France’s 1-0 win over Portugal which secured his team a spot in the Nations League finals. France were the relatively superior team coming closer to scoring in the goalless first half before managing to break the deadlock thanks to Kante dispatching a loose ball in the 53rd minute.

A big reason for France’s win was their defensive performance as they managed to contain their opposition’s intimidating attacking force consisting of players like João Félix, Bernado Silva and former Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Varane, along with his teammates, was excellent in deterring any true threat from the impressive Portuguese team who had yet to lose in the UEFA Nations League and were unbeaten in over 20 home games. Varane’s performance was timely given some of the attention his recent poor moments had garnered. The France coach and captain had offered their support to the center back in response.
