Luka Jovic has tested positive for COVID-19, according to an official announcement released by Real Madrid:

Both Karim Benzema and Luka Jovic were missing from the last training session before the Villarreal match, ruling out any involvement for either player. Benzema’s injury had been well documented, but until now there was no knowledge of a positive test within the team. Jovic will have a second test to confirm if he has contracted the virus. If so, he will be forced to isolate and quarantine for a minimum of 14-days, missing Real Madrid’s important fixtures vs Villarreal, Inter Milan, Alaves, and Borussia Mochengladbach.

The Serbian striker had just come off a massive international break where he scored three goals, produced an assist, and scored a penalty in a shoot-out vs Scotland. The Villarreal match was looking like an opportunity for Jovic to capitalize on his good form as Benzema was likely to be ruled out. His confidence was high, he had continuity over the break, and it finally seemed like his moment would arrive. Jovic will rightly be disappointed, but will hope he can turn the situation around before the January transfer window.
