Real Madrid attacker Karim Benzema didn’t train with the squad this Sunday after missing Saturday’s away match against Villarreal, meaning that his status for Wednesday’s visit to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League could be considered questionable, if not doubtful.
Benzema got injured during Real Madrid’s last game before the FIFA break, and while the tests revealed that his injury wasn’t serious and that he should be able to feature for Madrid after the break, his injury still seems to be needing more time. Even if Benzema finally manages to recover in time to play some minutes against Inter, his presence in the starting XI is extremely unlikely.
Mariano got the start this Saturday and seemed destined to lead Real’s offensive line against Inter if Benzema finally isn’t available, given that backup striker Luka Jovic tested positive for Covid-19 this Friday and will need more time before he’s able to test negative. Mariano scored Madrid’s only goal and was a positive, although Madrid will need more creativity against the Italian side if they want to attack efficiently and earn the three points.
