Spain sleepwalked to a 10-0 victory over minnows Moldova in a Euro Championship qualification match, doing one better than their 9-0 win against the same opponent back in September.
Spain lined up in a very attacking 3-1-4-2, with Marta Cardona starting out wide on the right. In a typical game you’d expect her to be classified as a wing-back, but Spain basically never had to deal with the ball in their own half. So, for all intents and purposes, Cardona was an out-and-out winger.
Spain executed their press and possess style of play without breaking a sweat and scored 5 goals in little over half an hour. Cardona wasn’t directly involved in any in that period, though she easily could’ve been if some of her pinpoint cut-backs had been dealt with more clinically. Regardless, she caused an own goal right before the end of the first forty-five and finally picked up her assist in the 57th minute. In the dying moments, she latched onto a poor punch off of a corner and won a penalty, which Jennifer Hermoso converted to make it 10.
Overall, Cardona looked as sharp as ever, torturing multiple defenders off the dribble and relentlessly threatening the box with a good variety of deliveries.
In the 60th minute, Teresa Abelleira got her debut for the senior national team after she was subbed on for Aitana Bonmatí. Playing in the right halfspace, the Real Madrid central midfielder was composed on the ball and energetic enough in the press, helping Spain to calmly close out proceedings.
With this result, Spain inch ever closer to securing qualification for the 2021 Euros.
