Disaster for Zidane’s men at the Mestalla.

A strong, lively, start ended in Real Madrid imploding after another disastrous defensive performance. Three penalties given away and an own goal. Make of that what you will.

See the players ratings below.

Thibaut Courtois - 6: Made himself big to save the first penalty attempt but unfortunate to have Valencia eventually put three penalties past him. Another terrible night from his teammates in front of him. Very tough to always be the one to try and turn the game around.

Marcelo - 4.5: Lively in the first 20 mins and teed up Benzema for the first goal. Didn’t react quick enough to Musa’s disallowed goal. Committed the foul for the second penalty and Valencia’s third goal. Another appearance showing his deterioration.

Sergio Ramos - 4.75: Calm and collected in the opening part of the match but also became part of the defensive frailty. Hand ball in the box for Valencia’s fourth goal (third penalty).

Raphael Varane - 4.5: The errors continue for the Frenchman. Poor clearance led to an own goal to give Valencia a 2-1 lead at half.

Lucas Vazquez - 4.75: In again as Real moves through their injury crisis. Linked well with Modric and Asensio (who often covered ground when Vazquez was out of position). At fault for the first penalty. Wasted opportunities in the second.

Fede Valverde - 5: Linked well with Modric to block any flow from Valencia in the first half. Had a shot in the second. Decent individual showing in Casemiro’s absence. Subbed after 76 mins.

Isco - 4: Did he even play? Apparently he did for 82 mins.

Luka Modric - 5.5: One of the most active players of the night. No way of telling how old this man is. Looked eager to keep the team moving and had a few chances himself. Played the entire match.

Vini Jr - 5: Decent threat in the first half and tried to get in on the action. One shot but couldn’t get too involved. Eventually subbed after 64 mins.

Karim Benzema - 5: Beautiful opening goal to get the team flowing but couldn’t find any luck afterwards. Subbed after 76 minutes. Looked to have pulled up with some discomfort near his groin.

Marco Asensio - 5.5: Lively tonight. Played with more intent than in recent games and did well to help defend. Also earned a lot of free-kicks. A good attempt in the second half. Subbed after 64 minutes.

Martin Ødegaard - 4.5: One good takeaway from the game is seeing the Norwegian back in action coming on for Vini Jr after 64 mins. Showed his footwork skills but couldn’t create much.

Rodrigo - 4.5: On for Asensio after 64 minutes. Tried to link up with Benzema and pull back a consolation goal but couldn’t click with his teammate.

Mariano Diaz - 4.5: Subbed on for Benzema after 76 minutes. Tried to get in on the action and ended up putting a header just wide. Nice individual footwork.

Toni Kroos - 4.5: Another sub after 76 minutes coming in for Valverde. Couldn’t get enough of an influence on the match.

Luka Jovic - N/A: In for Isco but not enough playing time.
