Real Madrid have the edge to sign Austrian defender David Alaba as a free agent next summer, according to a report published on The Athletic today. Alaba’s contract with Bayern Munich expires next summer and the negotiations to extend his deal have stalled, so the defender seems set to leave.

While other clubs would also be interested in signing Alaba, The Athletic suggest that Madrid are leading the chase, mainly because the defender is also keen on such a move, which would add depth to their defensive line.

The Spanish press indicate that Madrid are considering the signing of Alaba if Sergio Ramos doesn’t extend his contract with the club, something which isn’t clear just yet as Ramos himself will also become a free agent next summer.

Either way, both Alaba and Ramos —and also Luka Modric— will be allowed to negotiate with other clubs on January 1st, so Real Madrid’s board will get very busy in the next few weeks.
