Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic talked to Four Four Two magazine and revealed why he decided to leave Real Madrid and join the London based club two years ago.

“It was nice to play for Zidane, but I thought he could’ve given me the chance I deserved so that I could play in the third Champions League Final,” said Kovacic, who didn’t feature in that game against Liverpool.

“That was the main reason behind my disgruntlement, but that’s how football is and we parted ways with no hard feelings,” added the midfielder.

Kovacic appeared to be destined to lead Real Madrid’s midfield in the future once Luka Modric left the club, but that player now seems to be Fede Valverde. Kovacic is still 25 years old and is a relevant player for coach Frank Lampard, who is “similar to Zidane in the sense of what a coach has to be,” according to the Croatian midfielder.

Real Madrid sold Kovacic for €45 million four years after Los Blancos spent €30 million to sign him away from Inter Milan.
