FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique talked to the press after losing 2-0 in El Clasico against Real Madrid and decided to criticize what he saw from Zidane’s men.
“We’re upset, we thought we could get a good result because Madrid came into the game in bad shape, that first half was one of the worst Real Madrid I’ve ever seen at the Santiago Bernabeu. In the second half they managed to keep us defending and they scored their opening goal in an unfortunate play. Things would’ve been different had we taken advantage of the first half,” said Pique.
Barça’s captain has played in many Clasicos and he certainly knows that, while Barcelona were the better team in the first 45 minutes, the game wasn’t all that great for Messi and Co.
“I don’t say that as criticism, each team has its own issues, we didn’t play all that great but we had a chance to make a statement. Had we taken advantage of our chances in the first half they would’ve faced a tall task. They come out here stronger and we’re hurt but not dead. I think we have enough to win La Liga,” added the defender.
Real Madrid’s first half was mediocre, that’s for sure. Courtois saved his team in three good chances for Barcelona. Still, Pique saying that it was one of the worst performances from Madrid seems to be an overstatement, even more so after considering how Los Blancos dominated Barcelona during the whole second half.
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was asked about Pique’s comments and delivered a clear response.
“It’s his opinion and I can respect his opinion, but I take winning all Clasicos like this,” said Ramos.
