2019/20: Real Madrid 2-2 Paris St. Germain (UEFA Champions League group stages, matchday 5)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

It feels weird to start off this list (ordered from most recent to least recent) with a draw, but Real Madrid produced their best football of the season at home against PSG in the Champions League. Isco was at his disciplined best, breaking lines with his positioning and dovetailing with Eden Hazard to tear apart PSG’s right side. If you just watch the first forty-five minutes and pretend the second half never happened, you’ll come away happy and entertained.

2018/19: Real Madrid 3-0 AS Roma (UEFA Champions League group stages, matchday 1)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

There was a brief period where it felt like Julen Lopetegui was going to accomplish great things at the Bernabéu, and Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory over AS Roma was part of that time. Los Blancos dominated possession from start to finish and methodically picked apart the opposition’s shaky defensive structure.

2017/18: Real Madrid 2-0 FC Barcelona (Supercopa de España, 2nd leg)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Catalan

Oh, the 2017/18 season started off so well, didn’t it? By half-time of this encounter, Madrid had thoroughly humiliated their hated rivals, courtesy of another stunner from Marco Asensio.

2017/18: FC Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid (Supercopa de España, 1st leg)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Catalan

There was less Madrid domination in the first leg, but the game ended decisively in favor of the away side — and in thrilling fashion, too.

2016/17: Real Madrid 4-1 Juventus (UEFA Champions League final)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

The performance that secured back-to-back Champions League titles following a brilliantly executed second half. What more is there to say?

2016/17: Real Madrid 3-0 Atlético Madrid (UEFA Champions League semi-finals, 1st leg)

Video Quality: Passable

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick and a god-like defensive game from Sergio Ramos that brought Atlético Madrid to their knees. It was one of those matches where the Bernabéu atmosphere punched through your screen and raised the hairs on your neck.

2016/17: Real Madrid 3-1 SSC Napoli (UEFA Champions League round of 16, 1st leg)

Video Quality: Passable

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

2016/17 was the site of many of Zidane’s most impressive single-game tactical performances, with the first leg vs. Napoli being an outstanding example. After conceding early, Real Madrid locked up Maurizio Sarri’s attack with a well-executed high press and pulled ahead with the help of a Casemiro screamer.

2015/16: Real Madrid 3-0 VFL Wolfsburg (UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, 2nd leg)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

One of the greatest comebacks in Real Madrid history. Shame Peter Drury’s commentary isn’t included.

2014/15: Real Madrid 5-0 Athletic Bilbao (La Liga, matchday 7)

Video Quality: Passable

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

The 5-0 demolition of Athletic Bilbao was, perhaps, the perfect representation of Carlo-ball’s peak. The possession game was fluid, attractive, and consistently concerned with breaking lines. Defensively, the midfield worked their asses off, as Ramos and Pepe cleaned up anything that got through.

2014/15: Deportivo La Coruña 2-8 Real Madrid (La Liga, matchday 4)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

This game is all about fun. Real Madrid went balls to the wall and racked up eight goals via Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, some insane efforts from James Rodríguez, and a brace from substitute Chicharito.

2013/14: Bayern Munich 0-4 Real Madrid (UEFA Champions League semi-finals, 2nd leg)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Catalan

The night Real Madrid blew away Pep Guardiola’s formidable Bayern team and made their first Champions League final in twelve years. Sit back, relax, and enjoy an Ancelotti masterclass and counter-attacking excellence.

2013/14: FC Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid (Copa del Rey Final)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Ok

Commentary: Catalan

No Ronaldo? No problem. Bale, Ángel Di María, and Isco stepped up in massive ways to deliver an exhilarating victory over FC Barcelona.

2013/14: Schalke 04 1-6 Real Madrid (UEFA Champions League round of 16, 1st leg)

Video Quality: Passable

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Russian

If you want to watch prime BBC in action, this is your game. Schalke were absolutely helpless as Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, and Bale dribbled, combined, and shot their way to six beautiful goals.

2012/13: Real Madrid 3-2 Manchester City (UEFA Champions League group stages, matchday 1)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: English

This remains arguably my favorite ever Real Madrid game. Something about the bevy of great individual performances, the last-minute winner, the crowd atmosphere, and tension has stuck in my memory forever. I broke it down thoroughly in a retro tactical review, here, if you’re interested in further examining what you watched.

2011/12: FC Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid (La Liga, matchday 34)

Video Quality: Good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

This game is included for its significance more than anything. It wasn’t necessarily a bad viewing experience, but its entertainment value pales in comparison to some of the other entries on this list. If you want relatively good video quality and to feel intense nostalgia, this one is for you.

2011/12: Real Zaragoza 0-6 Real Madrid (La Liga, matchday 1)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

I selected this one to showcase the beginnings of what would become Mourinho’s finest ever machine. Poor Zaragoza simply stood no chance as Madrid announced their intent to reconquer Spain after three league-less seasons.

P.S. You also get to see Fábio Coentrão play in defensive midfield.

2010/11: FC Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid (Copa del Rey final)

Video Quality: Passable

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Spanish

This is the game that instilled the belief that Pep’s Barca could beaten. This one is for you if you’re down to watch 120 minutes of tense, significant football.

2010/11: Real Madrid 7-0 Málaga CF (La Liga, matchday 26)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: Russian

Real Madrid’s 2010/11 side blew away opponents just like their more evolved version in the following season. In this encounter vs. Málaga, you can observe all the elements that would eventually become part of a team that captured one of the most important trophies in Los Merengues history.

2009/10: Real Madrid 6-2 Villarreal CF (La Liga, matchday 23)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: English

People forget that Manuel Pellegrini built an offensive powerhouse that outscored Barcelona in the league and helped Real reach their highest ever points total in a league season (up until that point). Pick this one if you want to witness young Ronaldo pull the strings — alongside Kaká — for a side that was in all-out attack mode.

2009/10: Xerex CD 0-3 Real Madrid (La Liga, matchday 22)

Video Quality: Very good

Audio Quality: Good

Commentary: English

I chose this game for it’s video quality. Some of the other picks can be a little tough to watch on fullscreen, so view this game if you just want to see Real Madrid win without squinting.

2009/10: Real Madrid 6-0 Real Zaragoza (La Liga, matchday 15)

Video Quality: Poor

Audio Quality: Ok

Commentary: Spanish

More of Pellegrini’s offensive powerhouse — this time, with no goals conceded.
