French legend Willy Sagnol talked to RMC in an interview and revealed that he tried to sign Raphael Varane for Bayern Munich when he was a scout in the German side back in 2020.

“I went to see Varane and by halftime I could see how mature he was for such a young player, he was 18 at the time. I managed to get a good prize of €4 or €5 million and the board told me that he was a bit too expensive for a player that young. Two months later he joined Real Madrid for €10 million, that’s frustrating for a scout,” said Sagnol.

The rest is obviously history. Varane is still 27 years old and has become a legend for Real Madrid and one of the best defenders in the world. He started making a huge impact for Madrid during the 2012-2013 season and has been an undisputed starter ever since, replacing yet another legend like Pepe.

The €10 million Madrid paid for the French defender can be labeled as one of the best moves Los Blancos have done in recent history, given what Varane has achieved in the club and how many years of quality football he still has ahead of him.
