French defender Dayot Upamecano is completing a sensational 2019-2020 season with Red Bull Leipzig and has caught the attention of big clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, who are battling for his signing, according to a report from AS.
Upamecano has a €100 million release clause which will be reduced to €60 million in the next transfer window. He’s still 21 years old and it would be strange for Madrid to sign him just a year after spending €50 million on Eder Militao, who is 22 years old himself.
AS’ report seems to suggest that Bayern have the edge to sign Upamecano as a replacement for Jerome Boateng. Still, if Real Madrid are indeed interested in the French center-back, coach Zinedine Zidane could make a big impact in convincing Upamecano just like he did with Raphael Varane back in 2010.
In the end, it’s more likely that Upamecano signs for Bayern. He would be a starter there while he would have to wait for his chance behind Varane, Ramos and possibly Militao in the Spanish capital.
