Upamecano: “For me, Sergio Ramos is the best defender in the world”

RB Leipzig center-back, Dayot Upamecano, is one of the brightest prospects in the game. The defender has one year remaining on his contract and is reportedly being courted by many of Europe’s top clubs including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Arsenal. In an interview with Foot Mercato, the Frenchman cited Sergio Ramos as a reference for him.

“For me, Ramos is the best defender in the world,” Upamecano told Foot Mercato last year. “At the beginning I played in all positions and when they finally selected me as central defender, I started to observe him [Sergio Ramos] a lot.

“His personality is special and that’s why I think he could be very comfortable in any tournaments. Above all, that is what I love about Sergio’s game.”

It seems Upamecano will make the move to a European juggernaut this summer. He has been quoted in the past as referencing Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United as one of his ultimate goals as a professional football player. With Sergio Ramos contract expiring in 2021, maybe the French defender would eye a short understudy role from one of his role models in the game.
