Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois talked to Spanish TV station Television Española and discussed Madrid’s chances of winning the 2019-2020 La Liga title now that it looks like the Spanish competition is set for a return in the month of June.
“A proper Liga season should be completed. A champion should be crowned after playing every single game, otherwise it wouldn’t be fair. In Liverpool’s case I could see the points because they’re so many points ahead of everyone else. I never said that Madrid should be crowned champions. We were in good form even though we had lost against Betis. I have the right to believe that we were stronger than Barcelona even if we were two points behind. If the 11 remaining games are played, I have confidence in my team and in our odds of winning La Liga,” said Courtois.
The Belgian goalkeeper also talked about the return of Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard.
“I’ve been in touch with Hazard and I think he’s in good form. He’s looking forward to playing again and he’s lucky that now we all have to do individual work, he can use this time to recover. Marco is probably the one who is more excited about training because he got injured last summer,” explained Courtois.
He also admitted that Real Madrid will probably play their home games at Valdebebas.
“We have our own residency in Valdebebas and it might be easier for us there. We’d like to play at the Bernabeu, but right now we will do as we’re told from the club. It could also be beautiful to play in a stadium named after a club legend like Alfredo Di Stefano,” he said.
Courtois obviously wants to play in front of the fans, but he acknowledged that it will be almost impossible at this point.
“Every player wants to play in front of a full stadium, with that atmosphere and adrenaline. That’s what we want, but we know it’s not possible and it will be this way for a while. It is what it is, we will have to change the way we live because it’s crucial that we get rid of the virus,” said the goalkeeper.
He also explained the protocole they’re following.
“We have to take care of it. We can get dressed inside our own room but we are also wearing gloves, masks and we keep a two-meter distance from each other. Everything needs to be cleaned up. We will get used to it little by little,” added Courtois.
Real Madrid are two points behind Barcelona in the table. Los Blancos feel like they can win the title.
“We’re Real Madrid and we will fight for everything. We feel well, everyone is healthy, I have confidence in my team and I will always have it until the very last game I play for Real Madrid. It will be different without fans, but we will fight,” concluded Courtois.
