Guardiola now says Agüero will not be available against Real Madrid

Just four days after saying that his whole roster should be ready, the Spanish coach all but ruled out Agüero’s recovery in time for the match.

Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero will almost certainly miss the return leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16 against Real Madrid, scheduled to take place on August 7th. That’s what coach Pep Guardiola said to the press when asked about that matter.

“No. I think it will not be possible [to have him ready],” said the coach.

Guardiola delivered a different answer just four days ago, when he said that his whole roster should be healthy and ready for the game.

“If we’re lucky, every single player will be available to play against Real Madrid with the exception of Mendy, who is suspended,” said Guardiola then.

Agüero had surgery on June 24h to repair his left meniscus, so it was always going to be very difficult for him to recover in time for the game, even more so if Manchester City are hoping to advance to the Quarterfinals.

If Agüero misses Madrid’s visit to the Etihad Stadium, Gabriel Jesus will almost surely be Guardiola’s choice for the striker spot.
