Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin will be Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper in the 2020-2021 season, according to a report published today on AS. Lunin could’ve had that same role in 2019-2020 but left the club before Keylor Navas told the club he wanted to leave and join PSG, forcing Madrid to secure a loan deal for Areola.

It has not been an easy road for Lunin since he moved to Spain back in 2018. The goalkeeper couldn’t get the minutes he wanted during his loan deals in Leganes and Valladolid. In fact, Real Madrid decided to cancel Lunin’s loan in Valladolid and signed a new one with Oviedo, where he has been the starter during the second half of the season.

There, Lunin completed some brilliant performances and ended up being one of the main reasons why Oviedo avoided relegation to Segunda B.

Lunin has proved to be ready enough to be Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper and will almost surely play in the Copa del Rey, where he will have a chance to prove his worth in the big stage. It won’t be easy for him to bench Thibaut Courtois any time soon considering how well the Belgian keeper played this season, but Lunin is still 21 years old and needs to stay patient.
