Florentino Perez already stated publicly that there will be no ‘big’ signings this summer, so today’s report from Marca is not a huge surprise. But there are some interesting details in that report from them:
- The board, specifically CEO Jose Angel Sanchez, informed the players in a meeting today the club is not in a financial situation to sign new players because of the COVID-19 impact.
- Sanchez told told the players the club “weren’t in a financial position” to bring Alphonse Areola back for a second season.
- Sanchez did not rule out new faces altogether, but stated that any incoming players will stem from loanees returning. The most likely names: Martin Odegaard (all but confirmed), Dani Ceballos, and Andriy Lunin.
None of this is a huge surprise, but it’s interesting to see it explained like this in a meeting. As Kiyan Sobhani wrote yesterday, there is a huge case for ‘continuity’ this summer — to groom the nucleus of the current squad before a huge summer in 2021.
