On August 13 2017, Real Madrid went into the Camp Nou and churned out an incredible performance in the Spanish Super Cup. The game, which Cristiano Ronaldo came off the bench to score a golazo and get a red card, had it all.
From the Managing Madrid archives:
Ronaldo proceeded to take off his shirt, á la Messi, in celebration of this stunner. For his actions, he was given a yellow card from the referee. A minute later, Madrid used their final substitution by swapping Bale for Lucas Vasquez. Things took a turn for the weird when Ronaldo was given a second yellow by the referee and ejected from the match. He believed Ronaldo dove on a tackle in the box, which probably should’ve been a penalty kick, and rewarded him with a red card instead. CR7 was having none of that while giving the ref a quick shove before leaving the pitch.
Playing with only 10 men now, Madrid carried on the pressure. In the final minute of normal time, Asensio delivered his own cannon of a strike into the back of Barcelona’s net.
Of course, Ronaldo’s red card had long term implications. While Real Madrid won the SuperCopa with relative ease, beating Barcelona comfortably in the second leg, Ronaldo missed the first five games of the ensuing league seasons as a punishment for shoving the referee.
