Jonathan Barnett, yet again, spoke to the media about Gareth Bale. In an interview with BBC4, The agent had scathing criticism of both the club, Real Madrid, and it’s fans.
“Real Madrid should be kissing the floor that he walks on given all he’s achieved in seven years,” Barnett exclaimed. “There was a build-up of clashing personalities, a build-up of not being supported. There were many different things. I think for someone who has done as well and as great as he has for Real Madrid, I don’t think he got the respect he deserved. I think that was big problem.”
Along with his criticism of the club, Barnett went on to call-out the media and the Real Madrid fans, “What the fans did was a disgrace and the club didn’t help. I hope the issue of returning to Real Madrid does not arise. He will be so successful at Tottenham, he will want to stay and it will be easy to do the rest.”
“For seven years, everybody’s been saying Gareth Bale doesn’t speak Spanish. Gareth Bale speaks Spanish! Everybody’s been saying Gareth Bale doesn’t care about football — Gareth Bale loves football! He has never fallen out of love with football,” he emphasized.
When asked about the potential of the Tottenham Hotspur loan deal becoming permanent, Barnett was positive: “There are lots of opportunities. It is up to him. The most important is that he is enjoying his football and playing well. As long as that happens, there will be an opportunity to extend. We will have to wait and see.”
Barnett was then asked about the difficulty in getting the deal done, as Bale appeared to be on his way to China last summer, only for talks to break down. “This time I think circumstances made it a lot easier. It was all agreed that his career at Real Madrid was over. From that point on, it was quite easy once we realized Tottenham’s interest was concrete.”
“Gareth only wanted to play and obviously he will, but his happiness is what matters the most. We had other clubs, maybe bigger clubs than Tottenham, but he had to be happy with where he has gone and the moment he’s very happy,” explained Barnett.
Jonathan Barnett is never one to mince his words. He has been a staunch defender of Gareth Bale, but at times his defense has only dug a bigger hole for his client. He will have done no favors in preserving Bale’s legacy with the club and the fans given his most recent statements. Likewise, Tottenham Hotspur fans may not be happy with the opinion that they are a smaller club.
