Newest Manchester United signing Donny Van de Beek confirmed in an interview with De Telegraaf that he almost joined Real Madrid a year ago.
“As you know, everything was set with Real Madrid and the clubs had an agreement as well, but for some reason it ultimately didn’t happen. At first, you feel angry and question whether that kind of opportunity is going to happen again,” said Van de Beek.
Madrid planned to sign Van de Beek but neither James Rodriguez nor Gareth Bale left the club.
“I guess that what happened is that the players who were supposedly going to leave, ended up staying and that’s why Real Madrid pulled away from the move,” added the midfielder.
It was always surprising seeing Madrid going after yet another attacking midfielder when they had different needs, but Van de Beek’s words confirm that the interest was real and certain. Los Blancos will have different priorities in the next transfer window and Van de Beek will still have the chance to play for an elite club like United.
